Compassionate care
Back in the 1990s, while I was a student at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, I had the privilege of studying with David Eisen, a true pioneer in what would later become known as "Community Acupuncture". At the time, we simply called it group acupuncture, and we brought treatments into homeless shelters, jails, and dual-diagnosis clinics — anywhere people needed care. Recognizing the power of making this medicine accessible to more people, two of my classmates eventually gave it the name “Community Acupuncture".
At its heart, community acupuncture means treating several people in the same space. The experience can be calming and centering. It may also bring emotions to the surface that are needing expression.
